Step 1: Physical Connection and UK Phone System Setup

1Connect the Handset

Attach the coiled cable from the handset to the base unit. The connection should click securely into place with a satisfying click. Test that the handset sits properly in the base cradle and doesn’t wobble.

2Connect to UK Phone System

Use the included 1.5m cable to connect the phone base to your UK landline system:

  • Traditional BT landline: Connect directly to your BT master socket
  • Router connection: Use the “Phone” or “Tel” port (usually marked in different color)
  • Extension socket: Any UK phone socket will work

3Test Basic Operation

Lift the handset and listen for a clear dial tone. If you hear the continuous tone, your physical connection is successful. If not, check all connections are firm and try a different phone socket.

The Memo24 phone works with all major UK phone providers and systems:

BT

Sky

Compatible with Sky Talk and fiber services

Virgin Media

Troubleshooting UK Connection Issues

No dial tone from BT landline?

Check that all cables are firmly connected. Try connecting your old phone back to confirm the line is working. If your old phone works but the Memo24 doesn’t, contact UK support.

No dial tone from fiber broadband?

Ensure the phone service is activated with your provider. Some UK fiber connections require a special adapter – contact your internet provider for a free adapter if needed. Ask for an analogue phone adapter (that’s what the Memo24 phone needs). BT, Sky, Virgin, and most other UK providers supply these free of charge.

Can make calls but can’t receive them?

This sometimes happens with UK digital phone services. Contact your provider to ensure your phone service is fully activated and configured correctly.

Step 2: Programming Photo Memory Buttons for UK Numbers

Programming photo memory buttons with UK family contacts

1Prepare Your UK Contact Photos

Gather clear, recent photos of family members and important UK contacts you want to program. Photos should be:

  • Clear headshots showing the person’s face prominently
  • Good contrast and lighting (avoid dark or blurry images)
  • Small enough to fit under the transparent covers (just shy of 2.5cm x 2.5cm)
  • Easily recognizable to the phone user
  • Recent enough that the person looks the same

2Insert Photos

Carefully lift the transparent covers (might use a thin knfe for this) and insert the corresponding photos. Ensure photos are positioned so faces are clearly visible and right-side up. The covers should click back into place securely.

3Storing/Programming a Number Using a Picture Button (Speed Dial)

To store a phone number to a picture button:

  1. Pick up the handset and place it on the table. Press the STORE button, then enter the phone number you want to store.
  2. Press the STORE button again, followed by one of the 9 picture buttons.
  3. Place the handset back on the cradle.

Note: During these steps, ignore the dial tone.

4UK Number Programming Examples

Here are examples of how to program common UK numbers:

  • London number: 020 7946 0123
  • Manchester: 0161 496 0123
  • Mobile number: 07700 900123
  • Local services: Include full area code even for local numbers
  • Emergency (optional): 999 or 111 for NHS non-emergency

Step 3: UK Volume and Audio Settings

1Set Ringer Volume

Locate the ringer volume control (on the back of the base unit). Test all three settings by having a family member call from another UK number while you adjust the volume to find the optimal level for the user’s hearing.

2Adjust Call Volume During Conversations

During a phone conversation, use the call volume controls to set the audio level. Test with a UK family member to ensure comfortable hearing levels. The three settings should provide good range for most hearing abilities.

3Test Hands-Free Operation

Practice using the speakerphone function. This allows hands-free conversation with amplified audio, particularly useful for elderly users with hearing difficulties or mobility issues.

Essential Tests Before Handover

Before considering setup complete for your elderly UK family member, perform these comprehensive tests:

  1. Memory Button Test: Call each programmed UK number to ensure they dial correctly
  2. Volume Test: Have someone call from a UK mobile to test ringer volume
  3. Audio Quality Test: Have a full conversation to check call clarity
  4. Hands-Free Test: Practice using the speakerphone function
  5. Photo Recognition Test: Verify all photos are visible and easily recognizable
  6. Emergency Test: Test emergency contact numbers (but don’t complete the calls to 999)

Common UK Setup Issues and Solutions

Frequent UK Setup Problems

Memory buttons don’t work with UK numbers

Solution: Ensure you’re including full UK area codes.

Photos keep falling out of covers

Solution: Cut photos slightly smaller than the cover size. Photos that are too large push against the edges and pop out. Ensure covers click firmly into place.

Volume not loud enough for elderly user

Solution: Check that you’ve adjusted both ringer AND call volume to maximum settings. Test the speakerphone function which provides additional amplification. Some hearing loss may require specialist amplified phones.

Phone doesn’t work with UK fiber broadband

Solution: Contact your UK internet provider (BT, Sky, Virgin, etc.) to request what is called an analogue phone adapter. Most UK providers supply these free of charge for existing customers. The adapter connects between your router and the phone.

Can’t dial out – just get continuous tone

Solution: This sometimes occurs with UK digital phone services. Wait 10 seconds after lifting the handset before dialing. If the problem persists, contact your UK phone provider to check line configuration.

  4. Button 4: NHS 111 (non-emergency medical advice)
  5. Button 5: Local pharmacy or important service
